You are not the apparent self, or the self that seems to be; you are not your personality; you are not your intellect; you are not the job you hold; you are not the family you come from; you are not the sides you take, or the fights you see as worth fighting; you are not the opinions you hold; you are not the things that seem obviously right and correct to you; you are not your ego; you are not what the world thinks you are; you are not what the world expects you to be; you are not material.
Who you are, your True Authentic Self, is hidden under layer upon layer of all of the above things that you are not. Hidden under layers of what the world and your ego tell you you are. You have been sold a bill of goods! The world has sold you this bill of goods and the world is a dishonest salesman. The world knows that most people will not bother to review their bill to see just what it is they are purchasing. So there is a real need in all of us to destroy the definitions of ourselves we have purchased without spiritual due diligence.
To open to a spiritual awareness of who we really are means to no longer be persuaded to accept the unacceptable, the false beliefs about who we are, and to no longer be inured to the undesirable needs of the ego and the world. Huston Smith observed as part of his discussion on Hinduism in The World's Religions, "We are like kings who, falling victim to amnesia, wander our kingdoms in tatters not knowing who we really are." It may be said that we see things not as they are, but as we are. That is, as we have been told we are. We see things according to the bill of goods.
So to the original question - who are you really? The last on the list above of who you are not is - you are not material. The understanding that your True Authentic Self is not part of the material world is the starting point. we are all One with the Creator and Sustainer of all life. We are in God and God is in us. Who we really are is eternal Spirit here to give and receive Love. So be in the world but not of the world. Give no care to what the world tells you you should be. Pay no attention to your ego need to make you right and others wrong. Be silent and in humility turn within for guidance. There the amnesia is lifted and you be the ruler of your kingdom. There may be found true freedom to be who you really are.
