"Peace has been universally sought by people in all times. It has been the goal of law, religion, and politics. 'seek peace and pursue it,' proclaimed the Old Testament of the Holy Bible. 'Have peace one with another,' spoke Jesus in the Gospel of Mark. 'If thine enemy inclines toward peace, do likewise and incline towards peace.' states the Holy Qu'ran.
When people live in the awareness that there is a close kinship between all individuals and nations, peace is a natural result. Peace can come only as a result of concern and understanding for others. It can never be brought about by superficial negotiation or temporary agreement to end a conflict.
Signatures on a piece of paper cannot bring harmony. Since the beginning of recorded history, tens of thousands of peace treaties have been signed. Clearly treaties cannot sustain lasting peace. How could they? National borders, which are often created and supposedly protected by treaty, are artificial boundries that ultimately create division among humankind. They do not promote the underlying feeling that is vital in the creation of lasting peace.
Nor can the build up of arms guarantee a nation's safety. This is a lesson that must be learned finally and absolutley. It is time now to look toward deeper, more lasting feelings of love and understanding between people. This and this alone can bring sustained harmony within the global community."
The understanding that war begats more war and violence begats more violence are lessons that must be learned finally and absolutely.
Peace begins in every individual heart.
