To address this and to begin my thoughts on the mystical imperative, let my cite some ideas from What is Mysticism by Rev. Jon Mundy:
"According to David Hay, author of Something There: The Biology of the Human Spirit (2006), The work of the Religious Experience Research Unit at Oxford University showed that in the years between 1990 and 2001, while churchgoing fell by 10 percent, the number of people reporting mystical awareness increased by sixty percent. (see: www.religioustolerance.org) Something wonderful is happening! While freeing ourselves from traditional dogmas, we're opening ourselves to a more direct experience of God."
It seems to always be the mystics message that we do not exist apart from God. It is God who lives our lives. Among Mundy's defintions of mysticism :
Mysticism is a direct experience of God; falling in love with the truth of our Devine Self; achieving conscious awareness of Ultimate reality.
Mysticism is transcending the sense-world in order to experience Self.
Mysticism is an experience of freedom from the ego.
Mysticism is the inner pathway to the realization of the truths of God as immanent and transcentent
Perhaps we are all mystics in training. Stay tuned for more.
